The latest technological advances have been very useful for humanity, but have also created many problems. One of them is that we now want everything immediately. Nowadays we can watch all kinds of entertainment online, buy almost anything over the Internet and within a few minutes or days we will receive our order. These social habits somehow create the "anytime, anywhere" culture because customers can get anything at any time and receive it faster and faster or immediately. This has in a way created a misconception in our minds because we think we don't need to put in a lot of effort for a long time or have more patience with some things. As an example, how many people search for "how to lose a large amount of weight in one week", "how to get 6-pack in one week" and "how to quit smoking fast". Most of the people who do this have a lot of trouble achieving these goals because they think these processes should be quick and effortless.
In addition, instant gratification whose definition is the desire to experience pleasure or satisfaction without delay or postponement, is a recurrent problem in our lives, which often manifests as procrastination. This issue is a problem that everyone with an internet-enabled device has probably experienced. Nevertheless, not all instant gratification is bad.
Another question about immediacy, some people who see people of a similar age on social networks, look at their achievements and skills, and think that it is necessary to achieve that in the same time. We should not compare ourselves with others, everyone has lived and experienced different things. Everyone goes at their own pace.
On the other hand, I have experienced this problem, because I thought I should learn the languages that I am learning more quickly than I do. However, after having more patience with my process, and seeing my progress month by month, I am happy with my learning pace. We need to be more tolerant of our goals, such as a college degree, a job, and things that take time to pay off. We can achieve many goals and fail at some, but we have to enjoy the journey and learn from our mistakes. In the same way we need to rest, and relax sometimes, we can't be always working and learning every day, because our mind and body can't handle that level of intensity.
Thanks for reading my post. Let me know your opinion in the comments section.
Hi Luis_Ladino! I agree, I think the world is becoming way too fast paced! I used to be very self conscious about how quickly I would learn my languages. However, I am oddly relaxed with my new Japanese studies, I am enjoying my 15 minute Duolingo lessons a day to just pick up some more familiarity with the language. I really wish I picked up this attitude sooner, it makes life a lot more enjoyable! Regarding online shopping, I grew up on a farm where all the shopping malls were at least 30 minutes to an hour away by car and when online shopping was becoming more popular, I'd have to wait an entire month to get the items I bought shipped to me! So luckily, I've grown very comfortable with waiting, and I've always enjoyed the anticipation of receiving the items I buy, or thinking things over really well before I buy things. It makes my purchases seem more worth it! Anyway, your text is really good! I could only find a few minor mistakes when I read over your text!
I enjoyed reading your text. I can definitely relate to a lot of what you wrote. Just be careful with how you use commas.
Hi Emily! You're right. I'm glad you are enjoying your Japanese studies. I hope in the future to learn Japanese, maybe in a year or two. Thank you for your comment. And don't worry, those mistakes allow me to improve.
Tino, I'm happy you liked it. I will start studying about the use of punctuation marks in English.
Smiling as I read your post, as I am so guilty of being impatient with my Greek studies! Yes, some commas are needed, but it’s very well-written.
