"Contigo Peru" is a song considered as the second unofficial anthem of Peru. How is it that a folk music has become so popular that children, young people and adults know its lyrics by heart without being mandatorily taught in schools?

The answer lies in the touching lyrics, full of positive patriotism. The song begins by expressing gratitude for being born in Peru and the deep love that people feel for their country. Then it calls for unity to build the country's progress. The last part is the most moving and certainly makes any Peruvian cry, especially those who live abroad, because despite having a good life in another country, there is a nostalgia to return to Peru.

The song was made in 1977 by the composer Augusto Polo Campos to celebrate the classification for the Soccer World Cup, but the music went beyond sports sphere. I want to emphasize that only two musical instruments are used, the guitar and the box, accompanied by a wonderful interpretation.

When my eyes open and I see

that I still live, with you Peru

thrilled, I thank the sky

for giving me life, with you Peru

you are too big and will continue like this

we are all with you Peru

in my chest I carry your colors

and my love is with you, Peru

we are your children

and we will unite with you Peru

united on the coast

united in the mountains

united in the jungle, with you Peru

united at work

united in sport

united in the north, in the center, in the south

Let's win peruvians

because we are brothers

may victory be our great gratitude

I want to give you my life

and when I die I join the land

with you Peru
