Matcha contains the same amount of caffeine as coffee, but its effects are milder. They say that theanine, a component of matcha, slows the absorption of caffeine into the human body. Like many other things in Japan, matcha originated in China. However, people don't seem to drink much matcha in modern China.

Matcha is often used in sweets. People also drink matcha at a tea ceremony called "茶道 Sadoh". Sadoh is more about mastering and enjoying the art of making and drinking tea than about the tea itself.

Few people in Japan drink matcha at home on a daily basis, but I'm one of those few. I'm not interested in Sadoh much, so I just whisk matcha and drink it. I learned how to whisk matcha easily on YouTube.

The hand movements for whisking matcha are similar to guitar strumming. So, practicing matcha whisking makes me better at playing the guitar, and practicing guitar makes me better at matcha whisking.
