You certainly have already thought about the strange name of this letter in English: w. It's called “double u” though it's obviously a double v. Why is it so? I know the real reason of that but today I found another one. I'm sure it's not true but it's kind of funny. When it comes to spell a word in English, if any letter appears twice in a row in it, people usually say “double” before the name of the letter, right? So how to know whether “double v” or “double u” would refer to the letter w or to two straight letters v or u? That's easy: the letters v and u never appear twice in row, so there's no way to be mistaken.
But that's not true! Yesterday, I found out an English word that contains a double v! That only word justifies the fact that we call a double u the letter w.
Let me know in the comments if you guessed the word I'm talking about. And tell me if you know a couple of words containing a double v. And if you can mention any word containing a double u, my theory will plummet down.
Hi, I'd like to propose 'vacuum' as a word with double 'U'
skivvy
Ha! I knew the word “vacuum” but not the word “skivvy”. Thank you!
The word I had just discovered when I wrote this article is: revved up
