Nelson was a heavy smoker for more than forty years. He started smoking since he was teenager, because he wanted to look as cool as his smoking friends.
After getting married, the financial and working stress made Nelson rely on cigarettes more, although he knew it was harmful. In fact, he attempted to quit smoking many times but failed, because his coworkers were all smoking. The worst thing was that he craved for nicotine even more after trying to quit it for a short time. It made him too frustrated to quit. Therefore he ignored his wife and children complained about cigarette smoke in their house. He always found an excuse like some smokers still lived a long life when his family advised he stop smoking. It was easier to rationalize his bad habit than to break it.
Nelson had buried his head in the sand until he went to see a doctor due to his severe cough and shortness of breath. He was diagnosed with an irreversible lung disease caused by smoking. He would end up struggling to breathe well in the rest of his life. It was truly a bitter pill to swallow.
