Hello, guys. I'm going to do a little introduction about myself. My name is Felipe. I'm from Brazil, São Paulo. I'm 19 years old. I've been learning English for two years now. It's been a wonderful experience to me. I never thought I could learning a new language. But as I started to learn English, following some methods (Stephen Krashen philosophy), I realized that I could learn languages. And that's how a fell in love with this amazing world of language learning. Now, something abou my English. I think I am at intermediate or advanced level in English. I can't tell. So far, I've watched Friends; Doctor Who (which, by the way, is my favorite show; I'm currently watching the old show); The Big Bang Theory; Young Sheldon; The Flash; Arrow; Sherlock; Stranger Things -- and others, I'm not up to writing all their names. About books... When I started to learn English, I read lots of Graded readers and listened to their audios. I've lost the number of Graded reader that I've read. I find them extremely powerful to start reading in a new language. Graded readers give you the foundation with which you can use to read native books. I've read tons of Sherlock short stories (as I'm a big fan of the series, I plan to read the originals in the near future). As for natives native books: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; Harry Potter (all 7 books in the US version); The Hobbit; I, Robot; Percy Jackson (the first two books). I thing that's it. Now, a bit about my output process. I started to output in the middle of 2020. I don't speak yet; I just write because I feel comfortable doing so. I'll start to speak English very soon. I believe that if continue to improve my English, by reading books, watching TV shows and increasing my vocabulary, when I do start to say something, it will come out as natural as it can be. This is all for today. Have a good one. (and if you found a mistake in my text, feel free to point it out).
Felipe, well done! Your English is great, all the books you have read and shows you have watched are definitely paying off! Just a few tweaks needed on spellings and verb tenses, but that's all. Don't be worried about speaking, it sounds like you have built yourself a very strong foundation in learning the language and with all this great content you are taking in, I think you should have every confidence to start speaking straight away. Keep it up!
Well.... we native speakers can understand you perfectly...
I totally agree with you, Maria. My main goal is to enjoy what I'm doing. Now I do not enjoy speaking, so I don't want to force that. And thanks for the corrections. They are really helpful.
I think I've correct all the mistakes. I'll try to write paying attention now. I noticed that most of my mistakes were because I did not read what I write; so, next time, I'll review what I just wrote. Thanks a lot.
Awesome! I too love graded readers, and adore The Hobbit. I've read it 19 times at this point, haha! I think you're well on your way to speaking English very, very well!
<< Jess (@jlallard) >> OMG! You've read The Hobbit 19 times, that's a lot. Did like the way Tolkien writes? It's as if you found an old book.
@Felipe Haha, yeah, I love it! I love Tolkien's writing style, and he was a professor of Anglo-Saxon, which is what I studied in college. He was heavily influenced in his writing by works that I studied, and it's really fun to be able to pick out tropes, and homages to the Anglo-Saxon storytelling traditions in Tolkien's stories. :D
