Horror is not my cup of tea, but when a story is good, labels must be put aside. When I was a teenager, I used to watch horror movies compulsively. I'm still not sure why I liked it so much, but maybe it's because teenagers tend to look for extreme sensations. To be honest, most of the horror I watched at that time were jump-scare movies such as Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Final Destination, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Scares are funny, and the adrenaline feels good, but I just got used to it and horror movies stopped to affect me as it did before. Besides, as I got older, my taste for movies changed, and so the kind of emotions I expect in my film experience. Well, some years latter I watched The Others, and I really enjoyed. Although there is a supernatural aspect in this movie that unfolds in the end, I understood it much as a suspense thriller than horror. The point is: watching The Others didn't motivate me to search more horror movies then. However, watching Rosemary's Baby was a totally different experience. First, the supernatural environment is always present in Polanski's movie, but, on the other hand, it is never explicit. Actually, the horror itself is never explicit, it's always suggested. Therefore, Rosemary's Baby plays with your perception of reality, and you're never sure about what's going on. Nevertheless, the story itself is not just about horror and scares. Rather, there is an interesting discussion about motherhood. Finally, the direction is indeed well executed, I mean, it's a very well-done movie. At the end of the day, I'm now really curious about other horror films.
