"Do less - keep returning to that one thing and continue to refine it."
That was a statement I read the other day on James Clear's Instagram account as I was scrolling through Instagram - an activity I'm guilty of using frequently and spend my time immoderately, but I'm struggling to reduce.
I have a very busy daily schedule because I want to do many things and I usually can't find the time for all of them. As I wrote in a previous post, my main goal, which I started last year, is to study in order to hopefully become a professional full-stack developer.
Usually, after getting my kids to sleep, I end up opening my laptop late at night and trying to study. Sometimes I'm not so tired and can achieve a state of flow, but other times I can't understand almost anything of what I read or listen to.
My brain is so tired of all the decisions I have to make during the day and as science says, we have limited ability and finite energy to spend.
That's the reason I found the advice above very useful and I wanted to share it with you all. Currently, I'm trying to improve my English, incorporate yoga and meditation into my life, learn how to program, read a lot of books (an activity I absolutely love), study music(bouzouki) and redecorate my home.
I write this post also as an encouragement to myself in order to focus mostly on studying programming. I have to set priorities - I know :(
Thanks for reading :)
And listening :)
Interesting post Dimitris! It reminds me of the concept of the "flow". You know when you are doing something effortlessly. I think that "flow" appears when you're really enjoying what you're doing like language learning or studying programming if these activities are meaningful and enjoyable for you. I mean it's like playing video games or spending time with friends. Those activities are not chores that you have to do. On the contrary, they may give you energy. I've noticed that most of people tell me that they can't learn the language they want because they are too busy. Actually, they spend too much time on social media, or consuming any kind of content useless. If they dedicate all this time in activities which matter, they will find themselves less busy. But it's just my opinion, of course, as adults we have a lot of priorities and we just have to deal with by prioritizing the things that are more important.
Michael, I so much agree with you! People always ask me how can I find the time to do all the things I do and that they have no time at all. And my first question to them is "how much time do you spend watching TV ? ". I'm sure you won't be surprised of the answers :) And then of course I tell them " You have the time, but you don't really want to sacrifice the time you spend on relaxing activities."
I also love James Clear's books. You should read "Atomic Habits" - it changed my life.
@Carielyn I have read it! On the matter of fact, today I lent this book to a friend of mine :) Great book! It helped me to manage more efficiently my time and create good routines !
