They can be an awesome tool, a new instrument that can make our lives easier and happier, but at the same time, there is a not that positive side of social media, and here I'm going to be telling you how social media can be a problem.
It's well known that social media can be dangerous for several reasons, but I think that the most dangerous and alarming it's the "engagement". You could think that maybe this one is not the most dangerous, what about fake news, extremist political propaganda, suicide and so on, but here is a thing that might change your mind. It's a fact that the other ones are clearly a serious problem, but have you ever thought how much time of your life you have spent swiping down on Tik Tok, Facebook or Instagram? Those are hours and hours that you'll never get back, and no, I'm not trying to be that guy who is always pushing people to be more productive. But what I'm trying to show you, rather what I'm trying to share with you is that every single time that we login on any social media we are under risk, and yeah, it could sound a bit exaggerated, but look at the facts. Every single year, social media companies around the world invest millions of dollars to maintain their engagement, and also the appeal of their websites and app. But what is their main objective? Easy, to create a more addictive space wherein you can spend your time for longer. So how can we stop all this mess? Well, that's pretty easy too. Basically, by creating a schedule and being aware of how much time you are spending on social media everyday, is enough to create a healthy habit. Because yes, social medias have a lot of pros, but also they have many cons.
In my case, I realized how much time I was wasting on social media when I saw my user statistics on Instagram, and what did I find? Well, I was spending 4 hours a day on Instagram, 4 hours! That's a lot of time , 4 hours that I could have been investing in my language learning or even watching films, or reading and so on. Now I use a method that I've been finding absolutely useful and that has been driving me to a better way of using my time. That method is pretty straightforward. First of all, if you are trying to learn a language and you have a career, you should follow users that have to do with your career, but also making sure that each account you follow uses your target language. If you do this on every single social media account that you have, you'll see an improvement both in your career and your language learning. Naturally, you must control the time that you spend on social media, so every time that you wanted to use them, just put a timer on and then you'll be controlling how much time you're spending on it. So that's it, you should be careful with the amount of time that you spend on social media, because in the near future it will be the worst and most dangerous addiction of all time. Nowadays there are "technological-detox" for people who suffers from disorders, health problems or even some kind of addiction caused by social media and technology.
