People usually say that school prepares you for real life. But is this completely true? My experience tells me that, unfortunately, it is not.
As I started becoming more independent, I felt like I still relied on my parents on a lot of things simply because I hadn’t learnt how to do them. And, talking to people my age, I realized I was not the only one in that situation since we all had the same problems. How do you do your taxes? How do you manage the economy of a household? Economy was a subject given in high school but, instead of teaching daily economy, it aimed for students to learn how to manage a business. It may sound like a boring subject, but I think that, when being taught solutions to problems the students may have in the future, they are more receptive and pay more attention to the lesson.
But this was not the only aspect in which I felt I was lacking. When I went to study abroad, I realized that I didn’t know how to do things as simple as opening a bank account or hire a telephone company. I was completely lost. I didn’t know what I needed or what was best for me and my economic situation at the time. I kept hearing words I had no idea what they meant, which confused me even more. I am aware that these are things that people normally learn as they go, but there must be a better way. I believe that teaching student the basics of these important topics will be very helpful for their futures.
In conclusion, the fact that we have struggled finding our way through adult life doesn’t mean that future generations must go through the same thing. We can make things easier for them just by teaching life skills as the ones I mentioned in schools.
