Alright, I am quite excited about that.
I've been thinking about going abroad for a couple of years now, thus I started looking for jobs to save money. I've always been more of an office gal, but with my lack of experience, it's hard to find someone actually willing to hire me (guess what, it seems that writing down appointments and answering the phone requires a bloody college degree). So I also applied to be a saleswoman in a delicatessen shop, in a short-term contract to fill in for a lady soon going on maternity leave. And I got the job.
The working schedule is quite tiring, what with only having Mondays off, but as I now finished my first week of work, I find it to be really fulfilling. My clientele is quite old and wealthy, so they aren't always exactly nice (they tend to be extremely fussy), but I had the pleasure to meet a couple of lovely people. I think the only downside is that the workload is stupidly high (we open as soon as we arrive so we are supposed to deal with clients while cleaning and setting up the shop, plus all the preps and dishes to clean in the back) and we're supposed to be only two to deal with all of it, but I'm enjoying myself so far, and it is only for a solid couple of months.
Truth be told, I also didn't expect to have my knees and ankles in such a bad state every day, I should have seen it coming though as the job requires you to stay up and trample constantly.
What's quite funny though is that I am working for two chefs, one of them being an ancient starred one (ten years in a row!) who tends to shout and grumble a lot in the kitchens, while the other one seems to be a lot more laid-back. It creates quite the hilarious dynamic.
We're allowed to eat what the chefs cooked for our lunch too! However, I have to admit that I am not a fan of French cuisine, but as our clients are old people who like traditional cooking and absolutely refuse anything new or different, well I have to deal with mashed potatoes and calf sweetbread, overcooked hake fillets and undercooked rice.
Anyhow, this is going to be a really interesting experience and a nice addition to my curriculum!
Happy New Year! Very interesting and well-written post :)
