In 2016, I spent one year living in the United States to go to high school and learn proper English there. I had had about 4 years of English lessons in school at that point but I was pretty bad at it and we learned British English in school and I had always preferred American English - Sorry to all the people from the UK reading this, I was a fool back then.
So one day I was in history class, when I realized that I had forgotten my eraser at home. So I turned to my neighbor and asked him... for a rubber. My teacher spit out her drink when she heard what I had said and cleared up the misunderstanding for me.
But ever since that day, I couldn't trust my English teachers back in Germany anymore.

Funny story! I bet that was super awkward!

The mistakes we all dread...
Saw a similar scene unfold in Vietnam where they teach British/Commonwealth English when an American teacher heard a student say that they'd made a mistake and needed to "rub it out," a phrase that to me had been completely mundane up until that point, now sadly tainted forever.
