Some days all you want to do is crawl into the couch under a blanket, with a hot drink in your hands and spend the afternoon watching a comforting movie. I have a handful of movies that make me feel warm inside when I watch them and one of them is Sing Street.
In this fantastic film we follow the story of a teenage boy, Conor, who lives in Dublin during the 80s and who decides to create a band to impress a girl. Sing Street is a musical, but not one of those musicals in which the characters burst out singing and dancing out of the blue. We have a group of nonconformists, shameless and clumsy teenagers who record songs, music videos and compose music when they get out of school.
It sounds ordinary, and maybe it is, but the way in which the story is told and how everything revolves around music makes it special. Seeing the main characters getting inspiration from the 80s music to create their own was one of the highlights of the movie. And the fact that they do it in such a funny way, since Conor can’t play any instruments and chooses random people from school to be a part of his band, makes it even better.
But why is this a ‘feel good’ film? For me it is mainly because, even though at first it looks like a romance movie it is not. It is a film about friendship, family, achieving dreams and transformation. It is sweet, heartwarming and fun.
If you like musicals, the 80s aesthetic and films with chaotic groups of friends who just want to have a good time this is for you. I’m sure it will leave you with happy tears on your eyes, a shy smile on your face and wanting to create a band with your friends.
Very good! I love this movie too. It's been a while since I last saw it, but I remember really liking the music and the relationship between the two brothers.
