大家好!

I'm at the very beginning with Chinese. I know almost all the words for HSK1, but I'm still having a hard time forming sentences. How did you start, and how did you boost your Chinese? How much did it take you to have some everyday conversations with natives? Do you have any recommendations?
Thank you in advance :)

Welcome to the long road of learning Chinese. I am a native speaker, so my experience in learning Chinese won't help you. But when I learn other foreign languages, especially when doing it on my own, I find that learning the basic words are not too difficult, but forming sentences can be. The thing that helps me the most is exposure. By reading/listening as much as you can, you will get a better sense of what a proper sentence is like and writing will get easier. It is great that we now have journaly and can help one another. Write more and don't be afraid to make mistakes.
Thank you very much for sharing your experience! I'll try to immerse myself more into native contents
I'm taking HSK4 classes and I still have trouble forming sentences! I feel like most textbooks and classes focus on 生词. When I was living in China, it was easy to quickly learn everyday phrases as you heard them all the time. However, now that I'm not living there, I find it difficult to put newer words into those sentences. To help with it, I look up a few examples of how the word can be used and then I'll write down a few of my own examples of how I can use it. I also try taking 4-5 words and try to write a short passage. I've also found that watching movies and TV shows are a fun way to pick up more popular words.
你好 Jess, thank you for your advice! It's frustrating knowing that it takes sooo much time, but I think that in the end, it's worth it! Chinese it's such a fascinating language that every effort is rewarded. 谢谢🙏
