Why do some people seem to hate word play so much? Each time a bit of luck or inspiration strikes me (with a clever word play or pun), they seem to moan and groan as if I am about to blow their house (of cards) down with a breath of invisible words and meaning.
Why can't we all just have a great laugh when I deliberately misinterpret something for the pun of it?
When life throws me onions, I won't be making "onionade". That sucks. Period. But some humor and word play can bring tears of laughter instead of tears of sorrow. (Or tears from trying to make damn "onionade", for that matter).
Of course, natural funny words can dry up. They tend to be like wild animals: when you look for them specifically, they are likely not to be found. But when you least expect it, an interesting sighting of a rare specimen can all of a sudden appear. And then, one can give someone a pun for their money. And what is more exciting than that?
*For non-native English speakers: The title is word play on an existing English expression which reads "To give someone a run for their money". This basically means to provide someone or something with challenging competition or opposition.
:) This was great. Sadly, my partner loves puns and I do not. I guess there's two kinds of people in the world...
(Also, although I don't like puns in general, I thought you title was hilarious).
@KatyaBarta, thanks a lot! It seems you are spot on that there are two kinds of people...
