I don't even know how I came across this podcast. Sometimes I just want to listen or read to something different than the usual, therefore I look for random stuff on the internet.
Toxic is a podcast that came to life after the #FreeBritney movement took place. It's hosted by two of Britney's fans and they have nothing to do with journalism or the legal system (how awesome?!).
I am personally not a fan of Britney, since I grew up listening to other genres and I thought the #FreeBritney movement was... (no offense) lame. Something about people marching with pink clothes just had a cringe effect on me. Also, for me, this pop diva thing is problematic in many ways.
It turns out I was WRONG because Toxic is funny, entertaining and tackles not only Britney's troubled life and career, but the situation of conservatorship, specifically in the state of California.
It seems the conservatorship is not only a way to make money, where everyone wants and takes a bite, but the whole Britney process was plotted by her family — there are some court papers missing, for example. I feel so sorry for her and others that are in the same situation and I hope we can continue to talk about mental health, consent, and how gender can play a big role in some situations.
A very well-written piece. :)
Thank you, @Kalsoom!
OMG yes! I was also recently surprised by how much Britney's story intersects with important sociopolitical issues. I was not paying attention before and dismissed it as a trivial story.
Me too :/ And thank you for the corrections, Cecily!
