She was afraid that Markku would leave next day and that the kiss would change their friendship before it even had time to develop into admiration and love. Now she feared that she had lost Markku for good and wished fervently that it would be too late to fix things. Markku had been home for only a few days, but long enough for him to visit Annikki. He hadn't done that. When Annikki went to the Rantanen family in the morning on Christmas Eve, as she had done every year since she was a child, Markku behaved almost as if she wasn't there.
