Ostosteni vähäisyys hävetti minua. Kaikki näkivät minun viettävän joulua yksin. Ymmärsin, miksi yksineläjät inhoavat joulua: heitä hävettää. Jotain pahasti vialla pitää olla ihmisessä, joka ei edes jouluna saa ketään seurakseen. Söin yksinäistä ateriaani ja mietin, että Pippa oli ollut jouluihminen, lapsesta asti, kuten hänen äitinsä kertoi vuosittain joulun aikaan. Me ehdimme viettää pari oikeaa onnellista, lapsellista joulua kuusen ja jouluruokien tuoksussa, herkutella perinpohjaisesti, rapistella paketteja auki, lojua kaulakkain kahvin ja konjakin ääressä, suklaanappi suussa.

I was ashamed of the small amount of my shopping. Everybody saw that I spent Christmas alone. I understood why loners hated Christmas; they were ashamed. There must be something seriously wrong with the person who doesn't have anybody for company even at Christmas. I ate my lonely meal and thought that Pippa had been a Christmas person, ever since she was a child, as her mother said at Christmas every year. We could spend a couple of real happy, childish Christmas in the smell of spruce and Christmas food, relishing thoroughly, opening the packages rustling, lying around with coffee and cognac, a chocolate button in the mouth.
